1. Why did you start Music Zoo Studio?
I started Music Zoo Studio in 2011, shortly after having my fourth child, Mikaela. As a mum of four, I had been through the struggles of keeping my older kids motivated in one-on-one piano lessons. It often felt like a chore—for me and for them. We were missing the joy. That’s when I discovered Music for Young Children (MYC), brought to Singapore by a dear friend. Instead of signing Mikaela up right away, I chose to get trained in the method myself. I’ve always been passionate about early childhood education, and the MYC approach lit a spark in me.
One thing led to another. I fell in love with the way MYC brought parents and children together to learn through music, play, and laughter. So, that same year, I started teaching MYC programs at MYC Thomson, located around Thomson/ Bishan area. Within 2 years, I started my a second MYC branch, MYC Orchard.
Watching three-year-olds start their journey in Sunshine 1 and then grow into confident musicians taking Grade 8 exams as a group... it was magical. The community they built, the motivation they shared—it wasn’t just music. It was character. It was life-changing.
2. What do you believe music education truly offers young children?
Music education goes far beyond notes and rhythms. It teaches patience. It nurtures discipline. It shapes a child’s attitude toward effort, perseverance, and growth. I’ve seen students become more focused, more confident, and more emotionally resilient—not just in music but in school and in life.
What we offer at Music Zoo is a foundation. A place where children feel safe to try, to fail, to try again… and to succeed. And when they do, it’s not just their musical ability that grows—it’s their self-belief.
3. What makes your approach different from traditional music classes?
We don’t isolate children in one-on-one lessons where they sometimes feel pressured or disconnected. At Music Zoo, learning is joyful and social. We teach in small, age-specific groups with parent accompaniment, which turns music into a family experience. Children thrive when they feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger.
We also use structured, developmentally appropriate content that guides them step by step—and parents get to be part of every milestone. It’s a journey we take together, and that support system makes all the difference.
4. What moments have been most meaningful for you as a teacher and founder?
Some of my proudest moments are when I see children who started with me at age three blossom into confident, motivated learners—both in music and beyond. I’ve seen students who struggled with focus become top students in their schools. I’ve watched shy little ones find their voice through music. And I’ve witnessed the power of community—parents becoming friends, children inspiring each other, and families celebrating not just musical milestones, but life milestones.
It’s in those small, quiet moments—the spark of understanding, the high-five after a lesson, the proud smile of a parent—that I’m reminded why I do this.
5. What do you hope every parent feels when they join Music Zoo?
I hope they feel relief, that they’ve found a place where their child will be nurtured, challenged, and loved.
I hope they feel joy, watching their child light up, make music, and grow in confidence.
And I hope they feel part of something bigger—a warm, supportive community that believes in raising happy, resilient learners through the power of music and structure.
This isn’t just a class. It’s a childhood memory in the making.
